Model City Mannheim

13 mai 2016 / TournesolMicroGrids / Non classé

Dear friends,

We arrived in Mannheim … well actually we arrived in Mainz and learned that our first appointment was cancelled. Luckily was us, we were welcomed by Anne-Gael. Thank you Anne Gael and Anna for your wonderful hospitality. You girls are the best.

The next morning, we had the great chance to meet with Mr. Thomas Wolski of Power Plus Communication (PPC). Mr. Wolski worked on the project Model City Mannheim which was one of the first European projects of micro-grid in Germany. The project was launched in 2009, thanks to funding from the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Buildings and Nuclear Safety. The objective of this project was to try on deploy a micro-grid according to the multi-agent methodology. This is a great way to deal with the complexity of the micro-grid management via a cell-based vision of the grid and the use of decentralized intelligent systems. I bet you can’t wait to know more … we will post soon our full analysis on this project. You can also join one of our workshops!

PPC was in charge of the Smart Metering and system conception for this project realized in parallel in Mannheim and Dresden. The Mannheim DSO, MVV was also part of the project and is now planning to launch the discovered solutions in the German market. The most interesting part of this interview, beside the various teachings around the technical solution that was developed by PPC, was the vision of Thomas regarding the micro-grid. The cell-like system that they tested is not only working but achieving incredible results on the demand management side. However, as he mentioned it, the main barrier of the implementation to such a solution on a wider scale was the legal state of our Europe. More precisely, the implementation of a local market. It is not the first time that we hear this feedback from the pilot projects that we met. The energy legal framework for Europe has to evolve to allow wider developments. We hope to be able to know more, but we also hope to discuss this with you! Join us in Nantes on the 24th of May, we will discuss this problematic and many others with our partner Un Nouveau Récit, click here to know more: https://www.facebook.com/events/1138054069572952/

We have finished with our German visits now and it is time to head south. On to Italy to meet the team from the University Campus of Savona, part of the Resilient project. Ciao!
